250 miles and half a day later, here we are in York. (It would have taken much less time and less driving, but Scotland has basically one road that goes to England, and it was out being mended.)

York appears to have what I would describe as an overwhelmingly pub-based economy. Walking in Stonegate this evening, I counted within a distance of a hundred paces no fewer than fifteen pubs. It may have been more; in spots they are so densely packed together as to make difficult a precise reckoning of their number. If you should ever find yourself missing a pub, you should travel to York immediately; there is a very good chance you will turn it up there.

Unfortunately, most of the pubs I saw were in the business of selling "fayre". I do not, under any circumstances at all, eat fayre; it makes me extremely ill. We did manage to find one place that did us a very respectable plate of sausages however.

The Old White Swan. Even though they'd run out of most of their menu, it was the only place that was packed (I was amazed at all the places empty but for a lone bartender or server). And those sausages and the Black Sheep ale were really good.

Would love to meet you! We'll be bouncing about through your neck of the woods all this coming week. Perhaps we could get together for dinner? I'm quite keen to try Balti, which is something we don't have at all back home, and which is supposed to be amazing. Anyway, do let me know!

Well, I'm in Birmingham, and due to work I can't travel anywhere else during the week, but if you're passing through... Birmingham is the Balti central!

There's a nice Indian restaurant by Birmingham New Street train station called "Shah's", and by all accounts the food is fab, though I can't eat curry... a mild korma is OK in small amounts, though. It was always a very popular place to visit after clubbing when I was in my prime, and my ex-husband used to *adore* that place, and he's a massive Indian food fan :)

Let me know if you plan to divert through the Midlands! :)
